There are so many great options when it comes to packing a charcuterie board to go or making an outdoor charcuterie board! You will be surprised to see how easy it is!

It’s super simple to throw an amazing charcuterie box together with a variety of cheeses, cured meat, different shapes, good cheeses and fresh fruit at a great price. You’ll be turning that wooden board or a cheese platter in for a cute box to go and using this board as an outdoor charcuterie board is a great option!

Just Get Started!

A great way to start is with a Bento box. Bento boxes work well for charcuterie boxes to go. Believe it or not, you could use a scrapbooking box to put your items in while on the go.

Using these types of items comes in handy if you’re taking your box to a holiday party, spending time on a romantic date or while at the park on a beautiful day. Some boxes are large enough to put charcuterie platters inside. A great addition to making the perfect charcuterie board is to add some of your favorite things such as a beautiful cheese knife, fresh produce, great meats, dried fruit and edible flowers. For the perfect bites, heading to your local grocery store to grab smaller items and the best cheeses or specialty cheeses with bold flavor is a good option. Making a beautiful charcuterie board is a great idea for a picnic date night. There’s no limit to making a gorgeous summer charcuterie board with a variety of meats, summer fruit, stone fruit and the smell of fresh basil that is arranged in a simple way. You can grab these items from your local farmers market. Feel free to try a new piece of cheese while you are shopping for your board!

When I make outdoor boards, I think about snack boards and items that I would put on a small board. I like small pieces that I would normally put on a smaller board because it is the perfect option for outdoor dining for your next gathering. When a board has smaller pieces, you can accommodate any number of guests. It also makes eating easier if you’re entertaining for a movie night, the fourth of July or simply rolling out a picnic blanket.

Ps. Don’t freak out about having your cured meats and cheese outside! Charcuterie was invented in 15th century France. Using salt to cure meats was happening far before you and I walked the Earth! While there was no refrigeration then, use common sense now! Safety first!

Craft Stores Are Your Friends!

The smaller scrapbooking boxes are the perfect size for packing a board to go. These boxes come in different sizes so you can always find the one that works for you. I’ve had a cutting board or two that have never made it back home! It is not fun!

A portable charcuterie board or box is a great way to bring the items that you would put on your charcuterie platter when you don’t want to take your favorite cheese plate with you. It is also great during warm weather. If the board or box doesn’t make it home, it’s no big deal! A beautiful board can absolutely get its start in your favorite craft store! Grab some little bowls or small ramekins and begin to bring your charcuterie board ideas to life!

Mediterranean charcuterie board themes can be a healthy choice with a variety of flavors if you use cherry tomatoes, olive oil and a little bit of your favorite spice! Having a this type of a themed board on a warm summer night during the summer months or warmer months can make an epic board instead of the usual snack trays.

It is a good idea to line the bottom of the box with parchment paper or wax paper. All containers are not food safe so you want to make sure you take the proper precautions.

What Are Your Faves?

Remember, the perfect cheese is your favorite cheese. I love to add crunchy items!

My favorite thing is cheese cut into different shapes. Fresh fruits are great additions to cheeseboards too. My crew loves gummy bears so I add them whenever I can!

Fruits are the perfect way to add a pop of color to your board. Using seasonal fruit is the easiest way to help fill a big board or a large board with color.

Pro Tips

  1. Keep it simple. Don’t put too much thought into the box. I am a big fan of using what you already have at home unless you know you already have to go to Trader Joe’s or the grocery store.
  2. Choose a variety of ingredients. There are different ways to use almost everything. The easy way is your favorite way!
  3. Only put things that you need or love in your charcuterie board to go. Small bowls are good!
  4. A good charcuterie board does not have to be your typical charcuterie board!
  5. Cheese tastes better at room temperature!

Whatever kinds of cheese you have makes a good cheese board! Remember the taste of your charcuterie board is dependent on what you put on it.

Pro Tip

If I know that I’m going outside in the heat, I like to stick with harder cheeses but if you know that you’re not going to be outside long or the temperature is pretty mild grab some soft cheeses such as blue cheese. You can’t go wrong with any blue cheese on a summer board.

Remember to put fresh herbs and some sweet things, like dark chocolate in your box. If you want to take your board to the next level, stop by Trader Joe’s! They have lots of good options to pull in what you need.

You could give a to go cheese box or board as a hostess gift or as an instant gift under the Christmas tree. Of course that depends on what you’re putting in it and you don’t wanna leave the box under the tree for any length of time.

The best thing about all of this is that you can get it done and a few easy steps.

There is no wrong way to make a charcuterie board.
